Deliver interim Requirement and Testware traceability solution
Customer Opportunity/Issue/Problem: Software delivery organization recognized an immediate need to manage the traceability among requirement and validation artifacts, but was currently in the process of adapting a lifecycle tool suite for use across the entire enterprise. This tools suite introduction was estimated to take two years to complete. Management decided that an interim solution to manage requirements and testware was required. This solution was intended to be temporary, so must be low-cost, have a quick ramp-up time for new users, use currently existing, in-house technology, and must be delivered quickly in order to retain its ROI.
Engagement Goal: Develop and deliver a process (and associated tools, examples and training) for requirements and testware management that integrates into the existing software delivery process and tools, while meeting all of the aforementioned ROI-driven criteria.

Engagement Description: iTQP worked with the customer to determine the degree of risk encountered by the unavailability of a technologically feasible solution for managing the traceability between requirements and test artifacts. Satisfied that a risk existed, the team evaluated multiple potential mitigation strategies, and selected the creation of a set of processes and commonly available tools as a method for reducing exposure for the enterprise, while retaining a favorable return on its investment. Adoption of this technology was to be optional in order to reduce disruption to projects nearing delivery. A conceptual model that integrated with the existing solution delivery processes and tool sets was developed and presented to the user community for validation. Once a workable model was established, and its potential value to the appropriate constituencies demonstrated, a set of technologies was chosen with which to implement the model. An Access database was implemented with built-in reporting on the traceability among artifacts required by users for system delivery. In conjunction with representatives from related-process teams, processes that integrated tool usage with existing tools and processes were developed and validated. An example database and small-scale implementation were developed for reference by users as they adopted the overall process and for training purposes. Ultimate solution was presented to key constituencies for their adoption, while providing their training and support.
Key Result: Enterprise had workable solution that provided benefits to stakeholders. Cost, time, technology criteria all satisfied. Anticipated risk was borne out, and mitigated for those who chose to adopt technology solution.
